Yo-Kai Watch Episode 2: Japanese & English comparison.

Hey what up dude! It’s time for another comparison between the English versions of Yo-Kai Watch. Episode 2 this time, which aired Oct 6th, 2015.

I am not going to talk about the subtle differences between the Japanese and English on the script, to be fair I think episode 2 was stronger than episode 1. This time around I didn’t mind what I was hearing. This could have been because I knew what to expect or I am used to it but I think for the small changes it was nicely handled. I understand the change from “I love Sushi” to “I love Pizza” for example.

There we no censored scenes from this episode that I could tell but the next episode might be fun to watch to see how they are going to change it.

As I am not going to write much about this episode I will now show you the paint edits through out the episode. I may have missed some, if so feel free to let me know.

I will provide 2 pictures like before to show the comparison between both versions so that you can see the English edits from the Japanese version.
On top the Japanese while the bottom will be the English edits.

The first edits we see is when the narration comes on briefly explaining what a Yo-Kai is just before the opening.

Just a recap, the OP was the same. Has edits of scenes from the episodes at the start then goes back to how the Japanese version is except shorter. 60 seconds long.

After Nate has gone for a number 2.

Now I found this very interesting. It was obviously they would have to do something about this scene, and I was curious to see what they could do about. And I am impressed on the job, not only they kept it in but the amount of work with everything suited it well.

Can’t have children see girls in bikini’s but at the back of my mind I wonder showing Idols is still ok? At least they are all fully clothed now.

Last few edits.

And there we have it. That’s everything I spotted in episode 2. Thankfully no cuts or censored scenes this time around from what I could tell. A lot of a paint job edits. Some very nicely done, some I still wonder if there was any need to remove it.

(I do apologise if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes. I noticed there was a few on my episode 1 article which then I went back to fix the errors. I am writing this late at night, it has just gone 3.25am all so writing scripts/articles is not my strong point. But waiting for a video for these will take longer.)

  1. Another amazing comparison!

Once again, Sprite did a pretty good job adapting this episode for the English Dub. The paint editing is seamless unlike what we have seen in other edited anime, like 4Kids or Saban. They either have really good Photoshop editors or access to materials to better edit the footage. I remember hearing about a LA production company (I think it was Bang Zoom but I might be wrong) who worked with the Japanese producers of Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal to make a separate production from 4Kids when the legal disputes were still going on. It was mentioned that they were given access to materials to seamlessly edit footage, which 4Kids never got for some reason. I think might be happening here.

It’s really hard for me to look at Walkappa and not think of it as a Lombre with the color scheme of a Lotad. Guess that’s what I get for being a Pokémon fanatic for all these years.

I like how the Medals are used in this series and again, it makes me very excited to try out the video game for myself. Pokémon has been getting boring for me as of late (I only really play the Mystery Dungeon games anymore) so something fresh like Yo-Kai Watch is a welcomed change to me.

Good episode overall with nothing really noteworthy to point out except for the great paint edits during the “Harmeowny” scene. So far, I am enjoying “Yo-Kai week”!

Keep up the awesome reviews and don’t worry about spelling mistakes, I make plenty myself.

    1. Thanks again for commenting. And that is some interesting discussion about the studios. The next episode should be a fun comparison because I can at least think of one they might have to change but we shall wait and see.
