Anime Impressions

Spring 2017 Anime

I thought I would do an update on what I have been watching during the spring anime season, as some of the first impressions I wrote on here I have stopped watching.

Now if you have been following me for a long time you will certainly know I am big fan of Naruto and I’m defiantly going to carry on watching Boruto: Naruto Next generations. I personally haven’t found any episode being a weak one so far (currently on episode 7). I have enjoyed every moment of it and eager to watch the next episode when it airs. I enjoy the new cast of characters and the old. The action scenes have been great to watch and I enjoying hearing the soundtrack for the series. The only thing I want from this now is the reveal of the mystery shadow that is going on with this arc and when will we get to the pre/post graduation stage of things.

The highly anticipated Attack on Titan season 2 seems that it has not disappointed anyone thus far. I was not overly excited about it’s return than some people but with seasons 1 cliffhanger and that I don’t read the manga but I did want to continue to see what happens next. Episode 6 (33) is where I really started getting interested (currently on 7). And if you have watched it you know what I am talking about with that sudden cliffhanger from those two episodes. It was a long wait for this season but I have enjoyed it for the most part.

While I watched the first episode of Tsukigakirei, I explained that I did not like the style but it did grow in time and it’s just a nice relaxing series to watch. It’s not a series I would recommend unless you like the genre but it’s one of these series that didn’t instantly hook me, so I could have easily stopped watching it. I do stand on what I said in my first impressions such as the CGI, but with everything else I just seemed to get over it or it grew on me.

One of my favourites this season is Sakura Quest. The first thing I compare it with is Hanasaku Iroha even though it’s different it just has some of the same aspects such as main protagonist leaves big town and works in the countryside, friends help each other out etc., it does fall under the working series such as Hanasaku Iroha and Shirobako. Koharu, Yoshino has become one of my favourite characters, which for me I don’t tend to put a lot of characters in my favourite list. The whole community aspect and the characters working hard is an enjoyable one to watch. The animation is wonderful but not in highest quality that I have seen from P.A Works, but that doesn’t matter when I enjoy everything else from it.

Eromanga sensei is something I thought I would stop watching but funny enough I am still continuing watching it and I don’t really have a good answer why but from the last episode I watched (episode 6) is where the big rivalry of the story comes in to play. What I said in my impressions that I am not really interested in the ero/ecchi series anymore but I don’t think this has gone over the top of me to stop watching it but that each to their own on what they class on what is too much.

The last two series which is a bit of hit and miss are the laughing salesman and Alice & Zourkou. I believe the laughing salesman is 12 episodes long, if so that would be enough but if this was going to be an ongoing series I am not sure if I would continue with it. Not that I don’t like this over the top funny series, I do enjoy it and it’s a great concept of ‘what comes around goes around’. The 2 short stories in one episode is decent enough to keep you entertained and except for possibly 3 I have enjoyed all of it. And I would recommend this if you were after some comedy. With Alice & Zourkou, I was on the verge of stopping but after watching episode 5 I thought I would continue, saying this I have not watched episode 6 onwards yet. I would say it’s interesting and something different enough that it kept me entertained but not as much as the other series that I have watched this season.

There were a few more that I did check out but did not write and impression on the episode. I also got around watching Mobile Suit Gundam  (Dir. Sekita, Osamu, 1979) during the Easter break.

What have you been watching this season?

Tsugumomo: episode 1 impression

I was finally able to watch Tsugumomo as it became available on Crunchyroll, 2 episodes in fact. Slated for 12 episodes and based of the manga which began 10 years ago.

Knowing this has Ecchi; I was hoping it wouldn’t be that much as I am not found of that genre anymore. It did have some at the beginning and cliché moments like in the bathroom but nothing over the top that I disliked.

Screen Shot 2017-04-10 at 23.36.32

We get introduced to Kazuya before meeting Kiriha who appeared in to his life, I wont say how but mysterious kind of way. From then on it just get’s slightly troublesome and embarrassing for Kazuya in the normal Ecchi kind of way.

This seems to be the third anime that Zero-G has created. I thought the animation was nice, nothing I disliked which was good. The best thing from watching the first episode was the epic music used, from when I heard it I knew the man behind it, Takanashi, Yasuharu. The action scenes were awesome to watch, not only with the animation but the episode soundtrack that was used to accompany it.

When I first saw OP when this was released this was one of the biggest reasons I wanted to check it out as it looked like an entertaining series. And I was pleased with the outcome of the episode.

Screen Shot 2017-04-10 at 23.35.06

Like I said in my eromanga sensei impression, I do hope that this series won’t just turn out more ero (pervy), the ecchi that was shown I could tolerate, but the question is for how long will be until possibly something I will see will put me off watching it. Hopefully nothing will.

I would highly recommend this if you like Comedy, Ecchi and Supernatural series.

If you would like to watch this series, you can do so on Crunchyroll.

Eromanga Sensei: Episode 1 impression

When the title of the series you are about to watch is called eromanga sensei, I wasn’t sure what I was getting my self in to and would even enjoy if I would enjoy it with the ero in the title.

The verdict. Yes it was all right but would I continue with it, I am a bit unsure. The concept was entertaining enough.

Screen Shot 2017-04-10 at 14.46.29

Masamune Izumi who is a light novel author who still attends high school, as well he takes care of his shut in sister who he has not seen her for an entire year. By taking care I am mean that her brother has to make meals for her, as she does not leave her room. Obviously sick of this Masamune really wants to see his sister again. Going more in to the story will spoil the outcome of this episode.

Created by A1 Pictures, which some of you may know that I am a big fan of the studio. I am always interested on what they create and enjoy the animation they create majority of the time. I do like the style they create, I remember I had a discussion on this when a while ago when some people didn’t think the studio had it’s own uniqueness of animation but we will agree to disagree. You may think that and if so I would love to hear about it.

ClariS sings the OP for this series but I am sure what was shown was the ED with the OP song. I might be wrong but will have to wait for the next episode.

Screen Shot 2017-04-10 at 14.47.08

I do hope that this series won’t just turn out more ero (pervy) in later episodes, the ero that was shown in this first episode was not over the top and I didn’t have a problem with it while watching it with the story.

It has some Comedy, Drama and from what I have read it’s a romance and could turn in to a harem. If you were interested in any of these genres then I would recommend you giving the first episode a watch.

If you would like to watch this series, you can do so on Crunchyroll.

Love Tyrant: Episode 1 impression

This was a stupid show, but in a good way. The plot is a parody of Death Note and that’s a really good way to explain this. A parody off the wall first episode and I assume this is how it’s going to be every episode. It does not take it self seriously and that will be clear in the first minute.

The studio EMT Squared has only made a handful of series and this is my first time watching something they created and over all I enjoyed what was presented to me.

Screen Shot 2017-04-08 at 18.41.02

I don’t really want to give much away but as I mentioned the start does take parody of Death Note, and I assume you have watched; read; heard of that series and know the premise. Instead of the person getting killed by their name written down in the book, they kiss. Yes it’s called Kiss Note, and this is where the confusion comes in for our main protagonist Seiji. The Kiss note makes the person who kiss becomes a couple.

The animation over all was good, a lot of manga symbolisms was also used to make Guri expressions to be funny, some I liked and some I am not keen. Depends if it’s used correctly. The animation made the funny elements enjoyable. Even some music cues were used for comedy that I liked.

The OP was colourful, not really in to the song. Showed us the cast of characters, we have only been introduced a few so far, I hope when the others shows up they will be as entertaining as who we met so far.

Screen Shot 2017-04-08 at 18.42.34

There’s more to it than just hooking up and kiss, there are rules just like in Death Note, which drives the story but I don’t want to give anything away.

This is a must for comedy fans, even if it doesn’t sound to your liking. I would still try it out.

If you would like to watch this series, you can do so on Crunchyroll.

Tsukigakirei: episode 1 impression

This first episode was very slow placed and a product placement for the app LINE.

It was rather hard to keep interested in this episode as the two main characters were not that interesting and were shy with each other, there might be a reason as if something happened in the past, hopefully to make this an interesting story but nothing was mentioned in the first episode.

Screen Shot 2017-04-08 at 13.52.18

The OP itself was an interesting one because they had scenes, which happen in the first episode itself, but I wouldn’t call it spoilers. I didn’t know this of course until I saw the scenes repeated when watching it.

I have only completed 2 series from feel. Studio but I can’t really tell if I like what they are doing in the animation wise. The style should I say. I guess it’s a bit of an experiment, it seems that each character has some sort of light reflecting off their side of the face. But not only that sometimes they use CGI with the background characters and this looks off place when combined with non-CGI modules. I personally don’t like the use of CGI when it’s not need or used correctly.

Screen Shot 2017-04-08 at 13.54.11

I would admit I didn’t enjoy this as much I thought I would. And I don’t have much of an impression on this series. I will watch episode 2 to see where exactly this series is going and is there a more of setting than School.

I would recommend this if you are a fan of school, romance genre, but with everything else that was my subjective opinion and you may like the animation, the cgi use and the cast of characters.

If you would like to watch this series, you can do so on Crunchyroll.

Sakura Quest: Episode 1 Impression

I would like to say that I did enjoy this series but I am unsure if I will continue watching it. The first episode for me took its time to grab my attention and I’m glad I didn’t stop half way because by the end my feelings towards this series changed.

We follow Yoshino who has been searching for work in Tokyo and does not want to go back home, living in the countryside. Which I could relate to myself that I don’t want to work in my home town but rather in a big city, and I assume some of the viewers have even experienced this sort of thing, coming of age. After another rejection she gets asked to go to the countryside for some work, and from she gets in to a situation that she doesn’t want to be involved in.

Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 21.40.46

After seeing the countryside and getting to know her role this is where we find out the heart and sole of the other characters and their ambition and in what lengths will they go to make her stay.

With every character we saw in the first episode, they were tolerable enough but I know there’s a few more we have not got introduced as of yet. Hopefully they will be as entertaining as the others.

In my other first episode impression I have mentioned the OP or the music. The OP was rather catchy and it also go me thinking of Hanasaku Iroha for some weird reason, maybe on the location where it is set. Speaking of which, that’s another P.A Works series. The music for me was unforgettable but who knows next time I might hear a few tracks that I will like.

Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 21.41.15

The animation it self was the typical P.A Works but didn’t have that crisp to it, like some other series I have seen with them. I loved Yoshino’s character design mind.

Not sure who I would recommend this for as of yet because as I am unsure if I enjoy it enough for recommendation but I assume if you like anime based around work, countryside and comedy then give this first episode a watch.

If you would like to watch this series, you can do so on Crunchyroll.

BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS: Episode 1 Impression

I was really looking forward for watching Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.
Not only because I am big fan of Naruto, but I wanted to see what they would produce. Knowing that the Boruto manga first few chapters cover what happened in Boruto: Naruto the movie, it seemed this was going to be an Anime original. Which was fine by me if it was entertaining enough. But what would everyone else thing of this?

The first minute we see Boruto going up against Kawaki, just like in the manga, which shows us a glimpse of what’s to come in this saga.

Screen Shot 2017-04-05 at 16.31.24

The OP was very colourful and I was eager to hear more of KANA-BOON song “Baton Road”. Personally I enjoyed the OP and it’s one of these instance when it get’s me excited to watch the episode. Keeping with the music side of the things, co-composed by Yasuharu Takanashi and -yaiba- once again, but they took a different approach than what they created in Naruto Shippuden. With the different approach of OST, I still think it suited what was shown.

The story is set before Bortuo the Movie and before he joins the Academy, without giving much away I liked the build up showing the aspect of a more modern and how things have changed in Village Hidden in the leaves.

Like any other long series it will obviously going to take it’s time to build up and introduce the cast of characters, even though we see Sarada, Mitsuki and some other familiar faces, we get introduced to a boy named Denki. With Bortuo and Denki interaction we can see what type of character Boruto is as we have only seen Boruto in a movie and I believe we still don’t know much about him as a character.

Screen Shot 2017-04-05 at 16.43.15

Overall if you enjoyed Naruto I would highly recommend checking this out unless you are burned out from the series and called it quits when it finished. I think it’s also okay if you have never read/watched Naruto before, but you won’t have the same emotion on the cast of characters that show up from time to time, the ones obviously which were in the Naruto story.

I am excited to see what Studio Pierrot will create with this series and what kind of stories they can create if they cant rely on the manga.

If you would like to watch this series, you can do so on Crunchyroll.
